It must be beautiful.

Yesterday was the funeral for Anjanette and Louella killed in the Upton Nervet Rail Crash.

It was a lovely service and the music and hymns were very fitting for the occasion.

Anjanette was beautiful in so many ways and that came across very much yesterday throughout the service. Anjanette had 2 phrases she often used - "it must be beautiful" and "if you haven't got anything nice to say don't say anything".

Yesterday was also Children in Need and Terry Wogan and Gaby Roslin always put on a good show on TV for the evening.

I decided to cast on something which to me is rather a lovely garment and one which Anjanette would have thought "beautiful".

Noro Scoop Neck Cardigan

This is from the first Debbie Bliss Noro Collection and is knitted in Noro Silk Garden. I am using shade 34 which is a mixture of greens and mauves just like the picture.

The sleeves are knitted from wrist to top in the usual way but the back and fronts are knitted sideways.

Here is the back.

Scooped_neck_cardigan 001.jpg

I am making good progress on the right front so that should be finished this evening and I may be able to make a start on the left front.

We had some of this today.

Sleet.

It did begin to settle at one stage but not for long. I was so hoping to go outside and pose for a photo in my Colinette Comfy Cosy Coat but the sleet turned to drizzle - oh well maybe another day!

I got the buttons for my cardigan today - they are a cream colour so I hope they will look ok - well if they don't they only cost 16p each so I can buy another set!

I also bought 2 hot water bottles - I have finished one cover and it is waiting to be sewn up.

I also have the zip for York so maybe tomorrow I shall bring out my sewing up needle!

Happy Knitting.

Christmas Knitting

Alas, knit and Jones

Rumour has it

Catherine Zeta Jones has become obsessed on the set of her new film — with knitting PONCHOS.

The Hollywood superstar has so far made 15 as Christmas presents and plans to knit 20 more.

Family and friends will be groaning when they unwrap gifts from the actress and find they have all got the same thing.

Catherine Zeta Jones is in Mexico filming a follow-up to Mask Of Zorro and has found herself with too much time between shoots.

I have been doing some Christmas knitting this afternoon but not a poncho. I decided to make the Hartland Hottie from the Jaeger Assessories Book. I am knitting the Hottie in Chamonix.

Here is the front.

Hartland_Hottie.jpg

Hartland Hottie

The pattern has 2 hearts in it. I chose to do a purl stitch instead of putting a bead in to form the heart shape. I am surprised at how quickly this knitted up and the front has used 35g of yarn. The pattern calls for 3 balls of Chamonix but at present rate I shall use less than 2 balls. I have had the chamonix yarn for a while now having purchased it in John Lewis sale a while ago. Since I have 5 balls I should be able to make a couple of these Hotties and may even try beads in the second one.

I haven't decided on the recipient yet!

A PLEASANT WEEK-END

This week-end I was lucky enough to attend a Creative Design Weekend Workshop with
Louisa Harding at Rowan Yarns.

rowansign.jpg

I have been to the Mill quite a few times now and really enjoy my week-ends there - the autumn is an especially pleasant time to be in Holmfirth. I cannot explain why though. Perhaps it is the scenery from the rear of the Mill.

scenery2.jpg

They have undergone some major building work to the Mill that houses the showroom and there is a new entrance.

rowanentrance.jpg

New Entrance

The works should offer great improvements at future workshops - a new kitchen for one. They also have a grand entrance hall - very empty at the moment but I am sure they have plans for the space.

entrancehall.jpg

Entrance Hall

The workshops tend to start around 9.30 but it is always a good idea to get there a little early to check out any readymades that may be on sale and any boxes of discounted yarn.

You can always count on Nancy for having a good rumage!

Nancy

There were no readymades on sale this time. Rumour has it they all went to Ali Pali last month and any remaining garments are off to Harrogate later this month.

There were some garments on show around the room from the latest Rowan and Jaeger brochures and Nancy settled for a closer look at these.

Louisa Harding recently launched her Miss Bea pattern books for children. Louisa studied Fashion Textiles at Brighton University and a placement at Rowan Yarns resulted in two of her early designs being published. After univeristy she assisted a Canadian based Hand Knit designer in setting up her own Ready to Wear collection. On Louisa's return to the UK in 1990 she became an inhouse designer for Rowan Yarns, ultimately becoming the designer and brands co-ordicator for Jaeger Handknits. She now combines work as a freelance designer for Rowan and looking after her two children, Belle, age 4, and the inspiration behind the "Miss Bea" collection of books and Oscar, age 3.

Miss Bea books

Louisa knows she has found the perfect mix, family life combined with ongoing work for Rowan and freelance design.

The aim of the workshop was to help us unravel some of the mystery behind creative knitwear design and encourage us to translate our own creative ideas in to designs for a knitted garment. We discussed different elements of design such as colour, texture, motifs and pattern.

There are 3 stages of the design process which we explored over the week-end - inspiration, experimentation and design completion.

Rowan always prvide baskets of odd balls of yarn for use during the workshop.

workshopyarn.jpg

An assortment of yarn

We were asked to bring with us a source of inspiration to use at the workshop such as a painting, postcard, flower or photograph. We then looked at how we could identify elements, such as pattern, texture and colour, from our chosen inspiration source to use in our design. I used a selection of magazines which Louisa had brought in to choose pictures revealing shapes, textures and colours that appealed to me. This helped me put together my mood board.

moodboard.jpg

My mood board created on Saturday

We then looked at translating our inspiration source in to a design. We then had to draw out a section of our design on to knitters graph paper and knit a swatch, experimenting with different yarns and seeing how colours work together.

The emphasis of the week-end was to be as creative as possible, with no limitations to design and garment construction. We were encouraged to work at our own pace and enjoy being able to experiment with all materials provided - THINK CREATIVELY!

So what was my inspiration and what did I design and knit? I must admit the "D" word always makes me a little nervous - I am very good at following patterns and seldomn deviate to add my own little twist but now you never know what you may see!

I "designed" a scarf using 2 strands of Kid Silk Haze - a strand of Jelly and a strand of drab!

2 strands of kidsilk haze knitted together is lovely - so so so soft......

The pattern is

row 1 - P2, yrn, P2tog repeated across the row
row 2 - k2, yfwd, sl 1, k1, psso repeated across the row

There is a border at each edge of k2

Fellow Rowanettes Nancy Martin and Liz Jenks were also at the workshop and we all had a great time.

Liz and Nancy were staying at The Old Bridge Hotel so David and I joined them for breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday morning. They do a scrummy bowl of porridge - sets me up grand for a day of knitting.

After the workshop on Saturday we paid a visit to Upcountry. You cannot visit Holmfirth without paying a visit to this quaint little shop. They have a big table in the middle of the first floor covered in books. Nancy usually covers it in yarn whilst she selects her purchases but on this visit she was very restrained. Just a few balls of Noro and a ball of Debbie Bliss Maya.

David and I stay with David's dad when I have my week-ends at The Mill. David's dad lives in Barnsley which is about half an hours drive from Holmfirth.

David came in and joined us on Saturday evening for a meal and we went along to the Italian restaurant, Il Fresco, in the centre of Holmfirth. The ladies armed with our knitting of course although the light was not really up to knitting - it was dinner by floating candles- after several requests for more candles to give us more light we were up to 7 but still not enough light to knit.

We left Holmfirth to head south mid afternoon on the Sunday. David and I broke the journey up by stopping at Meadowhall Shopping Centre in Sheffield. We arrived there at just before 4 which gave me an hour to wander round the shops before having something to eat.

The Christmas decorations were up and I couldn't resist getting the camera out.

And to round the week-end off I have 2 days off from work.

Another Scarf

I am knitting another scarf!

This one is knitted in Noro Iro shade 9.

Noro_iro_scarf 001.jpg

Noro scarf

The pattern calls for 2 x 100g balls and is knitted on size 8mm needles. I have knitted up the first ball but paused because the scarf has a fringe and I need to cut the lengths for the fringe before I start knitting the second ball. Once I have all the lengths for the fringe I can just knit until all the yarn is used up. The scarf is knitted in garter stitch.

Another book!

This week I received a copy of Emma King’s new book 25 bags to knit. This a lovely book with bags to knit for all sorts of occassions and they will make great christmas presents. I am thinking of doing one for my sister - she has asked for the new Phil Collins CD for christmas. That would slip beautifully in to one of the little bags - food for thought over the week-end AND I may even have the yarn already in my "little" collection to knit the chosen bag.

Happy Knitting.

Sailing Sock

I finished one of my sailing socks today and here she is modelled by yours truly.

Cheery colours don't you think?

I must show you my new knitting bag

She is only 10cm high and 23cm wide. You can either carry your sock WIP project around in her or your knitting "bits and bobs". At the moment I have my scissors, sewing needles, tape measure and stitch holders in mine.

I am off to cast on my second sock now.

Happy Knitting.

Colinette Scarf

I have finished my colinette scarf. I cast this on on Wednesday evening and finished it on Sunday afternoon. It was a joy to knit, the colours are lovely and cheery.

One strand of Colinette Point 5 and one strand of Enigma both in fire shade.

I am able to fold the scarf in half, wrap it round my neck and tuck the end in. David says it looks lovely as I wear it around the house.

GOD BLESS

My week-end has not gone to plan so I am afraid we have no photo's of knitting.

The train crash of yesterday evening was too close to home. My family and friends were travelling on the railways yesterday between Reading and Newbury. My family are ok - they travelled on the train before the one involved in the crash. Sadly I have learnt this afternoon that one of my friends and her little girl were among the fatalities. Such a tragedy.

I have often used that very same train - the 17.35 Paddington to Plymouth and in fact I was on it only last Saturday after meeting up with a few of my knitting friends.

I have done a small amount of knitting and shall share my projects with you all over the next few days.

A Little Rest.....

from my Noro fest.

York is progressing well - one of the sleeves is finished and I have sewn in to the back and front. The second sleeve is knitted up to the armhole shaping - it shouldn't take me long to finish that and sew it to the main body pieces. I can then go buy a zip to finish it off - hooray.

Last night I had a sudden desire to knit something different.

I knitted this

Colinette_scarf_4114 003.jpg.

Scarf

A scarf using a strand each of Colinette Point 5 and Enigma both in colourway fire.

Still a little way to go and although I haven't been timing my knitting I don't think this has taken much more than an hour to knit. I cast on 20 stitches on size 10mm and did plain garter stitch.

This has spurred me on to knit some scarves as christmas presents. I shall be doing the planning this week-end in terms of colours and yarns - criteria at present is reasonably big needles so the scarves grow quickly!

Today I have been on a rail trip. I went to Torquay to visit one of my customers. The route planner on the AA website said a 166.4 miles one way which means 332.8 miles round trip. My knee is not quite up to driving that far just yet so I decided to take the train journey and what a lovely ride it was. A good part of the journey took us along the coastline of Devon. The sun was shining - it was great - you would never have thought we were in to November. I did some Bank work on the train but I also got to knit some of the 3 hour journey there and back. In fact I knitted 113 rows of Noro Kocharan - each row has 48 stitches and the pattern is garter stitch rib.

Well

Sunshine

At least this is what the weather forecast tells me for the week-end which means my Kocharan may make it out to the patio table so you get a peak of my next "Noro knit"!

Happy Knitting.....
